How to use it

  1. Open the PDF with ‘Choose a file’ or drag it onto the page. Its pages appear in a scrolling column under the toolbar.
  2. To change existing wording, pick ‘Edit text’ and click the paragraph. A box opens over it in the same size, weight and color; type the new text, then click outside the box.
  3. To add something new, pick ‘Add text’, ‘Note’, ‘Highlight’, ‘Pen’, ‘Shapes’ or ‘Add image’ and click or drag on the page. ‘Cover’ paints a patch over a spot you want hidden.
  4. Switch to ‘Select’ to drag boxes and pictures into place or pull a corner dot to resize them. ‘Undo’ and ‘Redo’ step through your changes.
  5. Click ‘Save PDF’, then ‘Download’. The edited copy keeps your file name with -edited added.

What it does

  • Rewrite in place

Click a paragraph and a text box opens on the same spot, in the same size, weight and color, with the old lines already painted over. A heading or a table cell is its own block, so you can change one without disturbing its neighbors.

  • Text and notes

‘Add text’ puts a line anywhere, regular or bold, from 8 to 48 points, in one of seven colors. ‘Note’ sets your words on a pale yellow patch, like a sticky label drawn on the page.

  • Highlights and drawings

‘Highlight’ colors a line or an area and leaves the text beneath readable. ‘Pen’ draws freehand with a mouse or a finger. ‘Shapes’ adds rectangles, circles, lines and arrows in widths from 1 to 12.

  • Pictures and signatures

‘Add image’ places a PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF such as a logo or a stamp, and you can drop an image file onto the open page too. ‘Sign’ opens a small window where you draw, type or photograph a signature and place it.

  • Cover a spot

‘Cover’ paints a patch over the area you drag across, filled with the background color found where you start. While the patch is selected, a swatch changes its color.

  • Undo, redo and delete

The last 80 changes can be stepped back with ‘Undo’ and forward again with ‘Redo’, or with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y (Cmd on a Mac). Select anything and click ‘Delete’ to remove it.

Good to know

A PDF holds a finished page, not text that reflows, so every change is painted onto the page. ‘Edit text’ covers the old lines with a patch in the page’s background color and draws the new ones on top. That suits small corrections: a date or amount on an invoice you issued, a price in a list, an address on a flyer. A whole new layout is better made in the program the file came from.

Covering is not deleting. The words under a patch stay in the file, and copying text from the page or searching it can still bring them up. If something must not be readable from the file, such as an account number, use Redact PDF, which replaces the marked pages with flat pictures.

Text that runs vertically or at an angle can’t be rewritten in place, and a password-protected file has to go through Unlock PDF first. If a PDF’s fonts hide their letters, the editor reads that line from the page image with text recognition and flags it so you can check it. Changes exist only on this page until you save, so closing the tab drops them. To let other tools open the same file, the page keeps a copy of it in your browser’s own storage for up to two hours; it stays on your device.

Questions and answers

Can I edit text in a PDF without installing anything?

Yes. Pick ‘Edit text’, click the paragraph and type. It works in a browser tab, needs no account, and the site adds no mark of its own to your file.

Why does my new text look a little different?

A font embedded in a PDF can’t be borrowed for new text, so yours is drawn in a standard font of the same style at the original size and color. Western letters stay real, searchable text, while other scripts such as Cyrillic or Korean go in as a sharp picture with a hidden text copy. If the size looks off, pick another one in the toolbar while the text is selected.

What if the new text is longer than the old text?

It re-wraps inside the same width and uses empty space below the paragraph. If there isn’t room, the size shrinks by up to about a fifth to fit, and if that still isn’t enough a note warns that the text may overlap what follows.

How do I edit a scanned PDF?

A scan is a picture of a page, with no text to pick up, so ‘Edit text’ has nowhere to start. Paint over the old wording with ‘Cover’, then type the replacement on top with ‘Add text’.

Is covered text deleted from the PDF?

No. A cover is a colored patch laid on top, and the words under it stay in the file, where copy and search can still reach them. Use Redact PDF when the text must not be readable from the file.

Can I add a logo, stamp or signature picture?

Yes. ‘Add image’ takes PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF files; a PNG with a transparent background lands on the page without a white box around it. Pull the corner dot to resize; the proportions stay fixed unless you hold Shift.
