PDF to HWP
Hangul is the word processor behind many Korean forms, notices and school documents. This tool writes the text of a PDF out as a Hangul file (.hwpx) that you can open and edit.
Add one PDF file to convert to a Hangul document.
or drop a file here
Your PDF is handled inside this browser tab and is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Pick the PDF with ‘Choose a file’, or drag it onto the page.
- Choose ‘Page range’ under ‘Pages to convert’ if you need only part of the PDF, and list pages like 1-2, 4.
- If the PDF is a scan, select the language of its text under ‘Text recognition for scanned pages’. English is selected to begin with, so for Korean text also select 한국어 (Korean).
- Press ‘Convert to HWPX’, then ‘Download’ to save the .hwpx file.
- Open it in Hangul and compare it with the PDF. If you need a .hwp copy, choose Save As there.
What it does
A real Hangul document
The file is written as HWPX, the XML-based Hangul format that Hancom Office 2014 and later open and edit. Page size and orientation follow the first page of your PDF.
Lines joined, headings marked
A sentence the PDF split over three lines becomes one paragraph, its pieces joined with a space as Korean writing expects. Body text is 10 pt and justified; lines clearly larger than the body become bold headings at 16 pt or 13 pt.
Page breaks follow the PDF
Every source page begins on a fresh page of the Hangul document, so the two can be checked against each other page by page.
Scans read with OCR
A scanned page is read by OCR (text recognition) in the languages you select, Korean included, and becomes editable text. A note under the button says how many pages came from OCR.
Tables flattened to lines
Hangul tables are not created. Each table row becomes one line with its cells separated by four spaces, so the order of the cells survives but the grid does not.
Converted on your device
Notices, forms and school records are converted in your browser. The PDF is not uploaded, and it is not changed.
Good to know
If you do not read Korean, here is the background. Hangul (한글) is the name of the Korean alphabet and also of the word processor made by Hancom, whose files end in .hwp. Government offices, schools and many companies in Korea still circulate documents in that format, often next to a PDF copy. A translator, a teacher, an office worker or a resident filling in an application who receives only the PDF has the same problem: it cannot be edited as it is.
Hangul has two file types. .hwp is Hancom's older, proprietary format. .hwpx is the newer, open one, a ZIP package of XML files with a published structure, and it is what this tool writes. Hancom Office 2014 and later open it. Without Hangul, Hancom's free viewer and web editor should open .hwpx files too. utilopdf is an independent site and has no connection to Hancom.
Expect text, not formatting. Pictures, stamps, signatures and shapes from the PDF are left out, and the text is set in Hancom's own Batang and Dotum fonts. An official form made of boxes and tick marks loses its grid, so ask the issuing office for the original .hwp whenever you can. Compare names, numbers and dates with the PDF, especially after OCR.
Questions and answers
What is a .hwpx file?
It is the open, XML-based document format of Hancom Office Hangul. Recent versions of Hangul open it like any other document and can save a copy as .hwp.
Can this tool make a .hwp file?
No, it writes .hwpx only. If the recipient needs .hwp, open the result in Hangul and store a copy with Save As.
I do not have Hangul. How can I open the result?
Use Hancom's free viewer or web editor, or send the file to someone who has Hangul. If you only need the words, PDF to Word and PDF to Text give you formats that open almost anywhere.
Does it read scanned Korean documents?
Yes. Select 한국어 (Korean) under ‘Text recognition for scanned pages’, and English as well if the document mixes the two. Stamps, faint print and small characters are the likeliest to be misread, so review the result in Hangul.
What happens to tables, pictures and stamps?
Tables turn into plain lines, one per row. Pictures, stamps and signatures are not copied. If you need the cells, PDF to Word and PDF to Excel retain them.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is read and the .hwpx is built in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and your original PDF stays as it was.
