How to merge PDF files free, in the order you need
You have a handful of documents and one place to send them. This guide shows how to merge PDF files free in your browser, how to settle the order before you start, what the joined file keeps and drops, and what to do when a file will not go in.
Decide the order before you touch anything
Most merging mistakes are ordering mistakes. Before you add a single file, write down the reading order you want: cover letter first, then the main document, then attachments, then proof such as receipts or ID copies. The person who opens the result will not know your intentions, so the sequence has to explain itself.
A quick test helps. Imagine printing the combined file and handing it over. Would the first page tell the reader what they are holding? If not, the first file in your list is probably the wrong one.
When you need to combine PDF files, and when you should not
Joining files suits anything that will be read as one packet: a rental application with an ID copy, pay stubs and a reference letter, an expense claim with invoices and photographed receipts, or twelve monthly statements you would rather store as a single document.
It is a poor fit when the pieces are meant to be handled separately. If a recipient must sign page two and return page five, or if one section is confidential, keep them as separate files. A merged file is one object; anyone who has it has every page.
Step by step: merge PDF files free and join PDFs into one
The tool shows one row per file, and the top row becomes the start of the result. These are the actual steps, with the button names you will see on the page.
- Press ‘Choose files’, or drop your PDFs and pictures onto the page. ‘Add more’ brings in anything you forgot.
- Look at the rows. Each shows a first-page thumbnail, the page count and the file size, so you can tell the files apart.
- Drag rows by their handle into reading order. For a long list, ‘Sort by name’ helps, and ‘Reverse order’ rescues a stack that was scanned back to front.
- Remove anything that does not belong with the × at the end of its row. A file added twice carries the tag ‘Already in the list’.
- Press ‘Merge PDF’ and check the strip of page thumbnails that appears.
- Press ‘Download’ to save merged.pdf, or continue with ‘Print’, ‘Edit while viewing’ or ‘Organize pages’.
Adding photos next to PDFs
Pictures can sit between PDFs without a separate conversion step. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC images each become one page that keeps the picture’s proportions and never grows past an A4 sheet. A phone photo shot sideways is turned upright.
Take a typical case: a PDF invoice, then three receipt photos, then a bank statement. Add all five files, put the photos in the middle, and the result reads in that order. If a photo looks small on its page, that is its true proportion on a sheet, not an error.
What is kept and what is lost
Pages are copied across with their own size, rotation and links, so text stays selectable and sharp. Things that belong to a document as a whole stay behind. Bookmarks are not carried over, and form fields stop being fillable, although whatever was already typed into them remains visible on the page.
The practical rule is to finish forms before you combine PDF files, not after. Upright JPG and PNG pictures up to 4,000 pixels on the long side go in without loss; other formats and very large photos are redrawn as a JPEG at 92% quality, and transparent areas turn white.
The size of the result is roughly the sum of the inputs. If it is then too big for an email, run it through Compress PDF as a second step.
Why a file does not go in, and the fix
A file that cannot be read is marked on its row and skipped, and the merge carries on with the rest. The status line tells you how many were left out, so check it before you download.
The usual causes are a damaged file, a password-protected PDF, or something that is neither a PDF nor a picture. For a locked PDF, remove the password first with Unlock PDF, add the file again and merge. For a damaged file, try to obtain or export it again from its source.
Fixing the order after you merge
Even careful people end up with one page in the wrong spot. The thumbnail strip is there for exactly this check. If something is off, you do not have to start over: ‘Organize pages’ opens the new file so you can move, rotate or delete single pages.
If you instead need to pull a few pages back out, for example to send only the receipts, Split PDF does that. Merging and splitting are two halves of the same job, so it is normal to use both on one packet.
Privacy and honest limits
Your browser reads and joins the files on your own device, and nothing is uploaded. There is no account, no watermark and no charge. That also means the work depends on your device: the tool sets no cap on the number or total size of files, but a very large batch can run out of memory on an older phone. Merge in two or three rounds, or use a computer.
The tool joins and orders pages. It does not edit text, fill forms or reduce size by itself; those are separate tools on the site.
Questions and answers
How can I merge PDF files free without installing software?
Open the tool in your browser, add the files, drag the rows into reading order and press ‘Merge PDF’. Nothing is installed, nothing is uploaded, and there is no sign-up or watermark.
Does the first row really decide the page order?
Yes. The top row becomes the first pages of the result and the rest follow in list order. Check the thumbnail strip after merging to confirm.
Can I combine PDF files and photos in a single document?
Yes. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC pictures can sit anywhere among the PDFs, each as one page, and sideways phone photos are turned upright.
Will the quality of my pages drop?
PDF pages are copied as they are, so text and graphics stay as sharp as before. Only some pictures are redrawn, as described above, and the merged file stays about as large as the originals together.
What happens to bookmarks and form fields?
Bookmarks are not kept, and form fields are no longer fillable, though typed answers stay visible. Fill forms in before you merge.
Why was one of my files skipped?
It was probably damaged, locked with a password, or not a PDF or picture. The row shows a note and the rest still merge.
